Upon its introduction in 1916, American citizens immediately fell in love with the Standing Liberty Quarter. Harkening back to the Seated Liberty of the mid-1800s, the Standing Liberties boasted beautiful artwork as intricate as any other coin of the era.
Even though these coins had a relatively short production run of less than 15 years, they have made a mark in history as one of the most beautiful quarter designs struck by the U.S. Mint. Minted from 1916-1930, the Standing Liberty was in general circulation for less than a generation.
Today, these coins are avidly sought by collectors.
THE VALUE OF A STANDING LIBERTY QUARTER
The premium commanded by a given Standing Liberty Quarter depends on several different factors. As is typically the case for older coins, a collector’s primary interest is in acquiring well-preserved examples of the coin.
If the piece has been excellently maintained, then the asking price will most likely supersede that of a similar coin in poor condition.
Besides condition, collectors must consider the type of coin they are looking to buy. Up to three discrete types of Standing Liberties were struck each year and in some cases different coin types from the same year can have drastically different values.
Because Standing Liberties were in production less than a century ago, it is not difficult to find coins that have been well-preserved since then.
That said, exceptionally preserved Standing Liberties will become increasingly rare simply because fewer of them exist with each passing year.
Apart from coins that are in excellent condition, other coveted Standing Liberty coins are those with rare dates and mintmarks. The “S” mintmark, for example is one of the rarest coins. Many collectors seek an “S” coin for years.
