New Commemorative Coin: Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Birth Centenary

The Government of India will issue a ₹100 commemorative coin to mark the Birth Centenary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on August 26, 2025, confirming this coin.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was a legendary Indian singer, lyricist, composer, and filmmaker from Assam, celebrated for his soulful music and powerful storytelling. Known as the “Bard of Brahmaputra,” he used his songs to champion humanity, unity, and social justice. His deep, resonant voice and heartfelt lyrics left an indelible mark on Indian music and culture. Beyond music, Dr. Hazarika was also a noted poet, cultural activist, and politician, earning numerous awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.

The metal composition of the ₹100 coin will consist of Pure Silver (99.9%). The coin will weigh 40 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin’s description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend “सत्यमेव जयते” inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “100” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the image of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. The inscription “डॉ. भूपेन हाजरिका की जन्म शताब्दी” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery of the coin and the inscription “Birth Centenary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika” in English shall be depicted on the lower periphery of the coin. The year “2025” in international numeral shall be written below the image of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.

Earlier, at a press conference held in Guwahati on April 24, 2025, the Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that a proposal had been submitted for a commemorative coin featuring the portrait of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. The details were also shared on this blog.
