A metal detector enthusiast in England has stumbled upon a treasure trove of silver coins believed to be 1,000 years old and worth about $60,000. Fifty-year-old Don Crawley, a native of Suffolk, found the 99 coins, which include pennies and half pennies, after making his first visit to a farmer’s land.

Medal in Numismatica Ars Classica auction marks Venetian victory over pirates

A silver medallic coin being offered in Dec. 5 auction recalls the ongoing threat of piracy to the Venetian economy. The silver osella (which weighs 9.77 grams and was equal to 78 soldi) depicts a Venetian warship on the obverse, cannon firing at a vessel flying the Turkish flag. This was a not-so-subtle reference to the Barbary Pirates who dominated the Mediterranean Sea for centuries.
