A true trophy piece is currently lighting up the auction floor at GreatCollections, as bidders fiercely compete for a spectacular example of the 1885 Liberty Nickel—a key date—certified at the condition census level of PCGS MS-66 and carrying the prestigious Grand Cru Label.

This premium gem five-cent piece is one of 43 graded MS-66 and is one of the toughest dates in the Liberty Head Nickel Series. The 1885 Liberty Nickel boasts one of the lowest mintages in the entire Liberty Head series at just 1,472,700 pieces. While not strictly a true rarity in lower grades, finding one with the full, original luster and immaculate surface preservation required for a superb Gem designation is exceedingly difficult.

Notable is the limited edition PCGS Grand Cru label. We’ve never seen this label before.

The market has responded with predictable enthusiasm for this example. With an aggressive 73 bids already recorded and the current price soaring past the five-figure mark at $13,250.00, this 1885 MS-66 has earned its place on the GreatCollections “HotList.”
