Just certified by CAC and unknown to the numismatic community, this mint error on an Eisenhower Dollar is unique. It has a brockage from an Eisenhower Dollar that was struck on a Dime planchet. Since the Eisenhower Dollar struck on a Dime planchet was very thin, the pressure from the Eisenhower Dollar dies expanded the diameter as it was struck into the Eisenhower Dollar planchet. This is an incredibly rare sequence of events.

Somewhere out there is the other half of this mated pair. It would be an Eisenhower Dollar Struck on a 10¢ Planchet. The obverse would feature an expanded, distorted portrait of President Eisenhower.
The only other known Eisenhower Dollar that was brockaged by an Eisenhower Dollar struck on a smaller U.S. coin was in the famous Dr. Berry Collection of proof and mint state error coins. His collection focused on Eisenhower Dollar mint errors and is considered the finest known collection of Eisenhower Dollar mint errors. Listed as #46 is a 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar with a brockage from an Eisenhower Dollar struck on a Quarter planchet.

Ike Dollar Brockage Struck on a 10¢ Planchet: A Rare Error with Major Appeal

One of the most dramatic and visually arresting mint errors in modern U.S. coinage is the Eisenhower Dollar struck on a Roosevelt Dime planchet — featuring a brockage error. This anomaly brings together two rare events: a wrong planchet strike and a brockage, making it an exceptionally collectible mistake among error specialists.

⚙ What Happened?

This coin began its journey through the Mint’s presses not as a blank Eisenhower dollar planchet, but rather a stray 10¢ (dime) planchet, likely intended for the Roosevelt Dime series. Measuring only 17.9 mm in diameter (compared to the standard 38.1 mm for an Ike Dollar), the dime-sized planchet was improperly fed into a high-tonnage press set to strike Eisenhower dollars.

Because the planchet was far too small for the design intended, it failed to capture the full details of either the obverse or reverse. What makes this particular piece even more spectacular is the presence of a brockage — a mirror-image impression of the Ike Dollar design, transferred when a previously struck coin failed to eject and acted as a die itself.

The result is a coin showing partial or distorted detail of Eisenhower’s portrait on one side, and a reversed, incuse version of the same or reverse design on the other — depending on die orientation. The small silver-colored dime planchet contrasts sharply with the oversized dollar design, adding to the visual and technical drama.

Why It’s Rare

  • Wrong Planchet Type: Most off-metal Ike Dollars are struck on clad quarter or SBA dollar planchets. A 10¢ planchet is particularly unusual.

  • Brockage Layering: Brockages on off-metal planchets are extremely scarce, requiring multiple simultaneous errors in press operation.

  • Visual Impact: The extreme size mismatch and mirrored image create strong eye appeal even for non-specialists.

Collector Value

Such an error can bring four to five figures at auction, depending on the clarity of the brockage, legibility of the devices, and overall eye appeal. Authenticated examples by PCGS or NGC labeled “Ike Dollar struck on 10¢ planchet with brockage” are exceedingly rare — commanding a premium from both Eisenhower collectors and major error coin enthusiasts.
