Rani%20Channamma

Rani Chennamma’s victory at Kittur in 1824 was one of the earliest acts of armed resistance against British rule in India. When the British East India Company tried to annex her kingdom under the Doctrine of Lapse, she refused to surrender and led her army with remarkable courage. Her forces defeated the British troops and killed their officer, St. John Thackeray, marking a significant victory for Kittur. Though later captured, Rani Chennamma’s defiance made her a symbol of bravery and patriotism, inspiring future generations in India’s freedom struggle.

The metal composition of the ₹200 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin’s description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend “सत्यमेव जयते” inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “200” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of the coin shall feature the image of Rani Channamma at the center. The year ‘1824’ in international numerals shall be inscribed on the left side of the image, and the year ‘2024’ shall be inscribed on the right side. On the upper periphery of the coin, the inscription ‘कित्तूर में रानी चन्नम्मा की विजय की 200वीं वर्षगांठ’  shall be written in Devanagari script, and the inscription ‘200th Anniversary of Rani Channamma’s Victory at Kittur’ shall be inscribed in English on the bottom periphery of the coin.
