This is the finest certified Woodchopper note and a rare one featuring the Vernon / McClung signature combination. The FR 84 $5 Legal Tender Note of 1907 is a highly popular and historically significant piece of U.S. paper currency, most famously known by its colorful nickname: the “Woodchopper” Note. As a large-sized United States Note, this bill represents the end of an era in American currency.
The most prominent feature on the front of the note is a large central vignette that gives the note its nickname. This intricately engraved image, based on a painting by Thomas Sully, depicts a pioneer family—a frontiersman holding an axe (the “woodchopper”), his wife, a child, and a dog—with a log cabin in the background, symbolizing the nation’s westward expansion and pioneer spirit. In the bottom left is the familiar portrait of Andrew Jackson.
The note is also one of the last of the so-called “Horse Blanket” large-size notes, measuring approximately 7.375″ x 3.125″—about 40% larger than modern currency.
