Coins We Love: When a Coin Show Isn’t a Coin Show

Sometimes we get a bit overly aggressive in scheduling travel to coin shows throughout the country. It happens every year (just ask my wife!), and we end up canceling one or two that we just can’t make it to, or we do back-to-back weeks with shows, only to return completely exhausted.

We’re at the tail-end of what I would suggest has been our busiest travel season. The month of October was a blur, and we’re wrapping up this “30 Days of Coin Shows” with the Whitman Baltimore show next week. We’ve been attending this show with the same table location for years. In fact, I can’t remember not being at our table that faces the front door. This location is one of the reasons we’ve been frequent attenders of this event for 20+ years, and even when the summer events have been pared down, we’ve shown up to make sure we don’t miss out on seeing our friends and loyal customers. So, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that we’d love to see any of you who are attending the show on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday at our table #540. And if there’s something on our website that you’d like to see in-hand, let us know via email here (coins@davidlawrence.com) and we’ll bring it along!

So, when is a show not a show? Well, in the past month, there have been at least 2 shows that we planned on attending that we didn’t make it to. One of these events was in Concord, NC (North Charlotte by the Speedway for those of you wondering), and while we didn’t have a table, Jack and JC were planning a day or two to visit the show and scope it out for the future. However, as soon as we started talking about it on Wednesday, we received a call from two customers in the area who were thinking of selling their collections. Since we were there, we dropped by to visit. As it turned out, we never made it to the show. The collections were far more than we expected (which is wonderful), so we spent the day visiting two clients, buying some coins, securing some consignments, and moving on. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see Concord or hear any engines revving up, but our most important mission was more than accomplished for the trip!

And, what happened at the PAN show two weeks ago? Once again, Jack and JC were making a two-day trip, and a customer called to sell us his small gold holdings. I’m not sure why JC decided to do so, as it was a last-minute judgment call, but instead of getting into his head, I’ll say “thank you!”. He visited the customer about 30 minutes away, didn’t even buy the gold (I don’t think), and walked away with a six-figure collection and a six-figure consignment. And Jack was left to his lonesome and wandered around the metropolis of Monroeville, awaiting JC’s return. In the end, both trips were quite different, as every collector has a different focus and views things differently. However, they were both incredibly successful in their own way. And while we didn’t exactly make it to our destination fully, it proved the value of being flexible and going where the coins take us!

So, if you have a collection and it’s just too much to handle shipping or delivering, let us know! We might be planning a trip to your area for a show, or maybe we’ll make a trip to visit you and your collection. *Bonus points if you’re in Hawaii, the Florida Panhandle, or somewhere else that seems like an amazing vacation spot.* If you’re located in any of these places, my wife might forgive me for all of the recent traveling! Let us come see you!
