Coins We Love: Sugarfire was Fire!

Coins We Love: Sugarfire was Fire!

A few weeks ago, Andy and I made a trip to St. Louis, Missouri, to purchase a massive collection from a long-time collector. This was an exciting milestone for both of us, since it was our first official million-dollar deal since coming to DLRC. Having done our homework ahead of time, the real challenge was logistics, because as it turns out, two people flying across the country cannot manage flying back with thousands of pounds of bullion!

Thankfully, we were able to move the bullion while out there and fly back with “the cool stuff,” as I like to call it. Among the jaw droppers were a 1795 Draped Bust Half Dime in PCGS XF40 and a 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar in PCGS XF40. Those are the kind of coins that get our blood pumping around here, for sure.

It was a whirlwind of a trip! On Monday, we flew in, met the customer, confirmed the coins, and took everything back to our hotel with us. Tuesday was spent selling the bullion and buying from a local shop. We flew back on Wednesday morning, which turned out to be an all-day affair after a 6+ hour delay in STL, a missed flight (Not our fault), and more delays. Overall, a good trip, but not without its headaches!

Being the first time in St. Louis for me (JC), we were able to take a moment and experience true St. Louis barbecue – something I have personally wanted to check off my “BBQ Bucket List” for quite some time. We happened upon a place called Sugarfire Smoke House and proceeded to have one of the best meals of our lives. I was particularly fond of the jalapeno pork belly hushpuppies (with mango jalapeno dipping sauce), and of course, the barbecue itself! Having missed lunch due to figuring coins, we sure were able to catch up and enjoy ourselves that evening. Andy also introduced me to a Midwest staple, Casey’s Pizza! If you know, you know, but if you don’t, it is seriously good pizza!

It was a quick trip, and we did not get to do any real sightseeing, but sometimes when connection flights are sparse and time is limited, you must get the deal done, pay the customer, and get back home in a hurry. So, the only decent look we got at the famed Gateway Arch was from the plane as we looked down upon the mighty Mississippi. Still, Andy and I enjoyed the experience thoroughly, making the journey, spinning deals, making new connections, and eating till our hearts were content.

Thanks for reading about our journey to the Midwest! We truly hope you enjoy the coins as they make their way through auction. For now, take a look at the stunning coins we have featured below and have a great week!

Numismatically Yours,

John Call and Andy Jeffrey
