Discovery of up to 15,000 Ancient Coins in North Wales
A metal detectorist from Cheshire has made what could be one of the LARGEST discoveries in Welsh history – up to 15,000 Roman coins buried in two pots deep in the North Wales countryside.

David Moss, an experienced detectorist, made the astonishing find with his friend Ian Nicholson while exploring a remote area described as “virtually untouched.” When he realised what they had uncovered, Moss said he felt a rush of excitement and disbelief.
The pair spent over six hours carefully excavating the site, unearthing layer after layer of ancient coins. Fearing the hoard might be disturbed or stolen, Moss went to extraordinary lengths to protect it – sleeping in his car for three nights before safely transporting it to National Museum Cardiff, where experts are now examining and cataloguing the discovery.
A Glimpse into Ancient Britain
This remarkable find offers a new window into the lives of people living at the edge of the Roman Empire nearly two thousand years ago.

Archaeologists believe such hoards were often buried during periods of unrest – sometimes hidden to keep valuables safe during invasions, and other times offered to the gods in times of crisis. The fact that the coins were found sealed in pots suggests they were deliberately placed there for safekeeping.
As archaeologists begin their detailed study, Moss’s find is already being hailed as one of the most exciting insights into Roman-era Wales in recent memory.
