Austrian Mint’s “Supernova” Coin Wins Prestigious 2025 Coin of the Year Award

The Austrian Mint’s “Supernova” 20 Euro silver coin has been named the ultimate winner of the 2025 Coin of the Year (COTY) Awards. The top honor was presented during a ceremony held today in Oklahoma City, in partnership with the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money® convention.

The “Supernova” coin, which also won the Most Artistic Coin category, was a favorite among judges for its innovative design. Its concave obverse features a rendering of the Crab Nebula, the remnant of the famous supernova first recorded by astronomers in 1054. The reverse design showcases a stunning colorized image of the nebula based on a photograph from the Hubble Space Telescope. As the inaugural issue in the Austrian Mint’s “The Beauty of the Universe” series, the coin celebrates the cosmos as a source of dynamic and beautiful events.

“The final ballot for the 2025 Coin of the Year winner was a close one. Only six votes separated the top three coins,” said Sophia Mattimiro, COTY coordinator. “The ‘Supernova’ coin pulled ahead for the ultimate win, the color and shape creating a striking design that appealed to the judges.”

The COTY program is an internationally conducted competition presented by World Coin News to recognize and encourage outstanding coin design and innovation. The 2025 program, honoring coins dated 2024, began with over 500 nominations. An international panel of judges determined the winner of each of the 10 categories, from which the “Supernova” was ultimately named champion.
