The Ministry of Finance has issued a gazette notification announcing the ₹150 commemorative coin to mark the 150 years of Vande Mataram, the National Song of India. The notification was officially published on November 6, 2025.
The Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will be releasing the commemorative coin and a postal stamp, at Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi on November 7, 2025. The celebrations will feature a mass singing of the full version of “Vande Mataram” at around 9:50 AM across public spaces, with participation from citizens representing all sections of society, in harmony with the main programme.
The year 2025 marks 150 years of Vande Mataram, one of India’s most iconic patriotic compositions written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875. The timeless hymn, meaning “I bow to thee, Mother,” became a symbol of national pride and unity, inspiring generations during India’s struggle for freedom. First sung by Rabindranath Tagore in 1896, Vande Mataram transcended literature and music to become an anthem of devotion to the motherland. As the nation celebrates its 150th anniversary, it continues to remind every Indian of the eternal bond between the people and their motherland — a song that embodies faith, courage, and love for Bharat Mata.
The metal composition of the ₹150 coin will consist of a Nickel Silver, comprising 60% Copper, 20% Nickel, and 20% Zinc. The coin will weigh 32 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin’s description is as follows.
Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend “सत्यमेव जयते” inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “150” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.
Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the image of British soldiers and Indian freedom fighters in the centre of the coin. The inscription “‘वंदे मातरम्’ के 150 वर्षों का स्मरणोत्सव” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery of the coin and the inscription “Commemoration of 150 Years of ‘Vande Mataram’’” in English shall be depicted on the lower periphery of the coin. The year “1875” in international numerals shall be inscribed on the left side of the image and the year “2025” in international numerals shall be inscribed on the right side of the image.
The ₹150 commemorative coin will stand as a remarkable tribute to India’s national pride, making it a prized possession for collectors. For numismatists, it represents not just a coin, but a celebration of 150 years of Vande Mataram — a symbol of the nation’s enduring spirit, cultural heritage, and patriotic legacy.
With its issuance in Nickel Silver, this coin is expected to generate considerable excitement among collectors, marking a new chapter in modern Indian coinage.
