On November 2, 2025, GreatCollections will sell a major condition rarity from the Saint-Gaudens series: a 1927-S Double Eagle graded PCGS MS-64 CAC. Hailing from the Fairmont-Morehead Collections, this coin stunning survivor of an issue that defies its massive original mintage was last sold by Stack’s Bowers in 2022 for $114,000. It is one of the toughest San Francisco-minted gold pieces in Uncirculated condition, and the presence of the CAC Green sticker confirms its superior eye appeal and technical quality for the grade.
The 1927-S boasts an original mintage figure of 3,107,000 coins. However, this seemingly large production number is misleading. Like many late-date Double Eagles, virtually the entire mintage was held in Treasury vaults and subsequently melted following the 1933 Gold Recall. Numismatic research suggests that fewer than 4,000 coins were ever released into circulation or commercial channels, and it is estimated that fewer than 300 examples survive in all grades today, with the majority residing in lower Mint State or lightly circulated condition. The 1927-S is, therefore, a true key date in high grades.
This particular MS-64 specimen presents beautiful, original surfaces glowing with satiny, honey-gold luster, highly desirable for a San Francisco strike of this era. The fields are clean and well-preserved, save for minor ticks and a small closter of diagonal scratches on the sun at the bottom of the coin’s reverse. These traits that undoubtedly earned the coin its CAC approval. When collecting the late dates of this series, conditional rarity is paramount, and this coin stands out for its high-end quality among the few Uncirculated pieces known. For the serious gold specialist assembling a world-class collection, this is a scarce opportunity to acquire one of the finest known examples of this challenging issue. Its current bid sits at $52,500.00 with 16 days remaining until the close of the auction.
