COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA – Rare and historic gold Sacagawea Dollars that flew aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia have sold for an astounding $550,000 each (Lot 1006 and Lot 1007), setting multiple new records in a special auction. The sale, conducted by Stack’s Bowers Galleries on behalf of the United States Mint, saw a collection of these rare coins fetch a total of $3.28 million.
The centerpiece of the auction was a group of seven Judd-2190 pattern 2000-W Sacagawea Dollars, minted in 22 Karat gold. These coins made a historic journey of nearly 2 million miles in orbit during the July 1999 Space Shuttle Columbia flight, commanded by USAF Col. (ret.) Eileen Collins, the first woman to command a U.S. space shuttle mission.
Lots 10006 and 10007 each sold for an incredible $550,000, tying them as the most valuable U.S. gold dollars struck since the Civil War. These coins also became the most valuable space-flown federal coins ever sold at auction and the most valuable Sacagawea dollars in existence, surpassing even the famous “Cheerios” variety and rare mule errors. The record price represents more than 300 times the gold bullion value at the time of the sale, highlighting their immense historical and numismatic significance.
In addition to the space-flown coins, the auction also featured the very first 2025-W Sacagawea Dollar, a 24 Karat gold coin produced to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the series. This unique coin sold for an impressive $120,000, confirming its status as one of the most important Sacagawea dollars struck in the 21st century.
The record-breaking event further solidifies Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ reputation, marking the fourth time the firm has been chosen by the United States Mint for a special auction. The firm has a history of high-profile sales, including the $7.5 million sale of the 1933 Saint-Gaudens $20 and the $8.2 million sale of 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair coins.
