The first 2019 dollar from the United States Mint’s American Innovation™ $1 Coin Program debuted today bearing a design honoring innovation and innovators from Delaware.
Product options include 25-coin rolls and 100-coin bags filled with Delaware dollars produced in uncirculated finishes at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints.
Last year’s 2018 Innovation $1 Coin served to introduce the annual series that runs at a rate of four issues per year until 2032 when an innovation or innovator has been honored in each state, DC, and U.S. territory.
Coins of the program share the same obverse (heads side) design which was created by Justin Kunz and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. Depicted are a likeness of the Statue of Liberty with inscriptions of “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1” and a privy mark of a stylized gear.

The reverse (tails side) of the Delaware dollar showcases a silhouette of Annie Jump Cannon against the night sky, with a number of stars visible. Delaware-born Cannon was an astronomer who invented a system for classifying the stars that is still in use today. Reverse inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ANNIE JUMP CANNON,” “CLASSIFYING THE STARS,” and “DELAWARE.”
Dollar coin edges are incused with their year of issue, a mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Ordering and Prices
Those interested in buying the new $1 coins may do so directly from the U.S. Mint online store for American Innovation products. Rolls are offered for $32.95 per 25-coin roll and 100-coin bags are $111.95.
Several other collectible products featuring the newest dollar and the others for 2019 will be released later this year by the U.S. Mint. As an example, above is a U.S. Mint image showing a lens holding proof editions of the four 2019-dated dollars which are scheduled for release on Oct. 11.
Forthcoming design from the series this year will honor innovations or innovators from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Georgia. The U.S. Mint will issue rolls and bags for these dollars in the upcoming months, as well as other collectible editions. On Oct. 11, the agency will also offer a set of the year’s four dollars in proof finish.
