bank notes

As reported in a previous issue, Archives International Auctions’ Dec. 6 sale included a choice U.S. rarity: a blank form for a U.S. Treasury interest bearing $100 bill dated 183-. It was the last available of a sheet of three discovered in a bank clean out and came in a most collectible PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 NET. When the dust settled it had topped its upper estimate to realize $28,800 including commission.

The world section of the sale on Dec. 7 included a small but choice collection of historic Communist issues from China. All sold for well above current catalog. A one yuan of 1934 from the Hunan-Kiangsi Branch of National Bank of the Soviet Republic of China fetched $2,880 in VF-EF on a $300-500 estimate, while a two jiao of the same bank dated 1932 went for $2,760.

Also from China, a Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank 1923 $100 specimen, P-S364s, took $3,900 in PMG About Uncirculated 53 NET. And a 1925 Ningpo Commercial Bank $1, P-546a, Shanghai issue, realized $2,400 in good VF.

From the rest of the world an Imperial Bank of Persia, 1896 tomans specimen, P-5s, graded PCGS graded Choice New 63 sold for $6,500. A slightly lower price was achieved by an Iraq 10 dinar (law of 1931) P-20a that took $6,000 in PMG EF-40.
